FREAK ST. FAIR: A NIGHT OF PSYCHEDELIC MAYHEM
April 5, 2006 (Denton, TX) -- -- Dentons Fry St. fair has long gathered attention for not only a full day of music but a day of bacchanalian decadence as well. The infamous fair has become a tradition in the North Texas area, a day for locals and former residents to party side by side and reminisce of old time and make new memories. But another lesser known tradition to mainstream Fair-goes also exists, anti-fairs and alternate fairs. On this weekend house parties with other great bands are only a drunken stumble away. And in this tradition is Freak St. Fair.

Freak St. Fair will be held J&Js in Denton on Friday April 21, 2006 (the night before Fry St. Fair). Organizers emphasize that in no way are they trying to compete with Fry St. Fair. Brannon Barr (organizer & guitarist/vocalist for The Mad Scientists) expounds, We are very much in the spirit of the Fry St. Fair. Our aim is to help people get in the mood and psyched up for the day to come. A lot of former residents return to Denton once a year for this event. They can meet up with friends and come out to Freak St. Fair eat great pizza, have a few beers, and hear eclectic music that is not typically featured elsewhere, and pay no cover. Freak St. Fair begins and ends early running from 8pm to Midnight.
The bands featured are a psychedelic lot that are more eclectic and bizarre than those typically featured at Fry St. Fair. The line up includes three Denton bands that have strong reputations for pushing boundaries and dont neatly fit into any one genre. The Violent Squid(Denton's ultimate noise band with a sense of humor), The Mad Scientists (the psychedelic mutants that escape from their lab leave observers enraptured, confused, or enraged), gymmatnap (one man creating multiple soundscapes). Also, coming in for one night only is Austins The Noise Revival(groove rock that makes the needle jump). Brannon states, We are fans of many of the bands playing at Fry St. Fair we just wanted an opportunity to expose the more chaotic and esoteric bands. A night of psychedelic mayhem is just what Freak St. Fair goers will get as a wamup for the day of debauchery to follow whether they attend Fry St. Fair or not.
