Mad Scientists were tapped to put on a set of early Pink Floyd, and I think that was pretty much the closest you could get to the real thing without the original members, a time machine, and a LOT of drugs.
There's a lot of talent in that band, though they're not exactly on the highest rung of the popularity ladder. Their original material is weird at best, a sort of jazz-metal infused background score to a modernized version of a 1950's movie about a science experiment gone terribly wrong. (Think Rob Zombie remakes "Them"). I think it's impressive in the age of clone radio that a band still plays exactly what they set out to play a few years ago without giving in and playing what's popular.

Soma Holiday - GB's Experimental Track of the Day

Soma Holiday is doing well in the experimental category on Garageband (http://www.garageband.com). We almost didn't classify it as experimental because for us its pretty straight forward but then decided most of what gets thrown in to experimental rock on that site doesn't really belong in that category anyway and the songs that do well are fairly generic pop songs. But we've never really understood how most people think anyways. So, we called it experimental (although we think its a bit of a stretch but its not exactly rock, jazz or any other simplistic category either) and of course what happens it gets track of the day.

If you want to download this song you can always go to itunes
or for the rest of December you can get it FREE! Not only will you get it free but you'll get all the songs off Geoparasitism (our cd) free and some extra bonus live/demo tracks. The myspace page (www.myspace.com/TheMadScientists) has been fixed up with a new bio, cdbaby AND itunes links, improved readability (or at least we think so), and LOTS of new pictures. Feel free to check out EyeGore's hard work when you have a chance. The website (http://www.TheMadScientists.biz) is still being worked on but should be completely updated by the end of the week. If you have some extra time you should definitely stop by and see all the hard work EyeGore did just for you. Plus, you can see pictures of our new drummer Brandon Whitehead. And maybe (just maybe) there will be some video clips up on both sites before the end of the year. If you have any video, audio, or pictures you've taken at our shows send us an email and we will put them up on the website and give you our un-dieing love.

Free CD Download (Plus Bonus Tracks) All December!!!

A few months ago (long before Radiohead's big annoucement) we hinted on our email list that everyone on it (what we refer to as Test Subjects) would get a free download of Geoparasitism as a tremendous thank you for being so incredibly awesome. Well, we thought about and we changed our minds. JUST KIDDING! No, the more we thought about how so many have already bought the album we wanted to do something special for everyone. So, what we came up with is that the free download version will include about half of the original tracks and about half alternate versions. Also, we are throwing in a couple of bonus cuts of live songs and early demo versions. Several people have told us they prefer the original demo recordings from our little 4 track recorder and we thought we would include those as a bonus and let you decide. But, to make things fun there will be different versions of the bonus downloads. You may get a live version of Amethyste and demo of Hideously Mutated Life. Someone else on the list may get a live version of The Burning Circus Tent and demo of Masquerade of the Macabre. We're still digging up tracks so its all a mystery to even us right now. If you want to post a comment either here or on the myspace blog or on the guestbook (www.TheMadScientists.biz/guest.html)) and see if someone wants to trade you mp3s go for it.
Think of it as the Garbage Pail Kids of the 00's. Meet other Test Subjects like yourself online and then see each other in person at a show. So, now with all that hoopla your wondering how will you obtain the downloads to begin with. Aha! First, you must sign up for the email list. There is a form to do so on our myspace page (www.myspace.com/themadscientists) and on our website (www.themadscientists.biz) We will email the files to you within 24 of the time you sign up starting Sat. Dec. 1st (if you sign up by Fri. you'll get them on Sat.).

It's Over

Today is the that we finally announce that it is over, our search for a drummer. That right, we are proud to announce that Brandon Whitehead will be the newest Mad Scientist. Brandon is a hard hitting maniac with an old school punk background. He bring a new level of heaviness
to the band but is the super strength industrial glue that binds the mayhem together. We hope you can make it out to one of our shows this month (Oct. 19th (this Friday) or Halloween) and check him out. We also plan on debuting at least one new song at the Dallas Scaregrounds (2001 Irving Blvd.) on Friday. We plan on keeping the new stage show underwraps though until Halloween night at Hangman's House of Horrors in Ft. Worth. Friday at the Scaregrounds will be really fun. Its a great haunted house and we are playing with our dear friends Violent Squid and Silk Stocking.

If you want to read more go here for the press release

We're Gigging Again

While nothing is secured on who or what the drummer will be (or if there will be one) we will be playing this month as we return to some of our favorite haunted houses in the area.

First, is the Dallas Scaregrounds on Oct. 19th (The night before Kim's bday stop by and wish her the good tidings). We will be playing with our longtime friends and two of the best bands in DFW Violent Squid and Silk Stocking. You do not have to pay for the house to see us play but I do believe there is a small ($2) charge to see just the bands. If your interested in the the houses (which are super cool btw) you can print out coupons on the website, find us, or keep your eyes peeled while your out and about. The website it www.dallasscregrounds.com

Next, to announce is our return Hangman's House of Horrors in Ft. Worth on Halloween night. If you can't make 7pm have no fear (yet) there will be three sets of insanity for you to come lose yourself to. You can come see or show for free or purchase tickets for the haunts (HIGHLY recommended - money goes to charities) Hangman's had been featured on the Travel Channel's America's Scariest Halloween Attraction and is the 1 charity haunted house in the U.S. Come out and help support four excellent charities: Safe Haven, American Cancer Society, A Wish With Wings, and Rock Top Therapy Center. If you recall a week after our last show with Christina, Denton was hit with a flood of almost biblical proportions. Unfortunately, the laboratory was on the perimeters of the affected area. On the evening of the first big set of storms the roof to the lab began to leak and eventually cave-in in a few spots. Do not fret the mutants, lab equipment, and music gear were safely stored in a more secure area of the lab and nothing was damaged. So, needless to say since all this occurred drummer auditions and much more have been put on hiatus while we found a new laboratory and moved. Fortunately, that has been taken care of and the unpacking is almost complete so drummer auditions and song writing for the upcoming album can resume. The new laboratory is bigger, nicer, and has an area we are fixing up into a small recording studio so in the end this really worked out for the best.

Thanks!

We want to thank everyone who made it to Secret Headquarters on Friday and for helping make it an unforgettable night. So let's begin with our most requested song, Hideously Mutated Life. This song is a heavy bluesy rocker injecting toxic slime into your brain. It was one of the earliest songs written by Kim & Brannon and has been a set list staple since the earliest days of the band. This song is fun to play live and get the crowd up and moving but it also has an important message check it out at (http://www.themadscientists.biz/lyrics). Now to demonstrate just how mad we actually are, we make this song available for free download at (http://www.themadscientists.biz
http://www.myspace.com/themadscientists or
http://www.download.com/themadscientists ). Please realize these are mp3s and they will be of inferior quality to what we offer on our
demo cd available at all of our shows and various locations across the DFW area. Plus, the cd comes with cool fetal olive artwork!

Christina's Final Show This Friday 4.20.7

Friday will be your final chance to see this incarnation of The Mad Scientists. Christina is leaving to pursue her visual art interests and will be playing this last show with us. We are very fortunate to
be doing this show at such an amazing venue as Secret Headquarters (SHQ). If your not not familiar with SHQ it a DIY venue in Denton (210 E. Hickory - the old Art Prostitute building). It is a cool, funky, BYOB venue where the music is always amazing and the coolest Dentonites hang out. It is definitely a music venue but it has the laid back vibe of a great house party. Your almost always guaranteed to meet new people and see people you haven't seen in a long time. Given all this it seems like a great place to play our final show with Christina. If you sign up for the email list at the show or are already on it and make it out we will give you a special gift so you can remember Christina always. We will be playing with our good friends and an amazing group of musicians Violent Squids. Violent Squids will be doing a special collaboration with the Oveo that night. With the Squids you never know what to expect; they're experimental, improvisational, and insane. Also, hitting the stage is the young Denton band, Christian! Teenage Runaways.

Liquidating Earth's Assests (April MySpace song - Geoparasitism)

Its a new month and that means a switch of songs on the old myspace player (http://www.myspace.com/TheMadScientists). This month we are featuring the title track, Geoparasitism. This is one of the strangest tracks on the album
(http://www.cdbaby.com/madscientists or if this is more your style itunes). The best can be described is prog metal with brain blistering time changes and loud experimental noise fests that release you from their grip only once you brain cells have been perfectly rearranged. This was the final song written for the album and one of the most difficult as it features several times signatures (7/8, 6/8, 9/8, 10/8, and the weirdest of all 4/4). You almost have to hear it to believe it.

What is GarageBand?

We keep telling you about awards various songs have won on GarageBand.com (http://www.garageband.com). Pt. 2 (What We're Looking For)

DFW/Denton's most divisive band, The Mad Scientists, seeks drummer. We are three piece band (Guitar/Vox, bass guitar, drums-that's where you come in) that makes experimental dark psychedelic jazz metal that explores the boundary between chaos and structure. We have played at a wide variety of venues across the state of Texas and will continue actively gigging as soon as you are familiar with the music. We are also developing an increasingly elaborate multi-media stage show and are working on the music for our follow up to the debut album, Geoparasitism.

We do require that you be able to practice at our practice space in Denton a minimum of 4 times a week while learning new material and 3 times a weeks once your more familiar. Also, be prepared to gig on a weekly basis with the out of DFW area shows once a month and assist in promotion for these shows.

To hear mp3s please go to www.TheMadScientists.biz or www.myspace.com/TheMadScientists.

What Reviewer's are Saying:
If you haven't seen them, they play this weird blend of psyche influenced rock with sharp funk rhythms and half shouted vocals. There is also some inexplicable guitar shredding to top it off but I've enjoyed them when I've seen or heard them. I prefer the originality of their music over a lot of Denton's "tasteful" retro country rockers, music theory students, jazz heads, and gear fetishists. - We Shot Jr - It List: Sat. 9/2/06

Welcome to the dark underbelly of experimental psychedelic jazz funk, where conspiracies have global relevance and humanity (to quote brilliant comedian Bill Hicks), is “a virus with shoes”. The Mad Scientists descend into their laboratory to blaze musical trails like hallucinogenic tracers, mocking and deconstructing the capitalism, competition, greed, selfishness, waste, and spiritual disconnection that lead our human race to the precipice of self-annihilation. Geoparisitism will challenge listeners musically and socio-politically. A few of the songs function as fine singles, but this eclectic fusion is rich with sonic layers and overarching lyrical themes, and so deserves to be experienced in full, with a macrocosmically enlightened ear. - Christopher Largen's Review of Geoparasitism on WarOnJunk.com

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://themadscientistslablog.blogspot.com/2007/03/are-you-mad-enough-to-pound-these-skins_22.html' title='Are You Mad Enough to Pound These Skins? It was a very fun if abbreviated set and we hope to have a revival meeting in the not too distance future that will be a full length performance (perhaps a human sacrifice will be in order this time). If you missed the show don't worry you catch the extended version next time it comes around AND we may have some video of the show up in the next week or two! A huge apology to all who missed the show due to us going on later than expected and having a 3 song set.

Now time for a Rant in Bb minor (an explanation of the abbreviated set). Note: The opinions expressed here are only that of The Mad Scientist known as Kim and may or may not reflect the opinions of the rest of the band. Any hate or love regarding the following should be directed at her and not Christina or Brannon (unless they of choose to voice their own opinions then direct responses accordingly). The complaints here are only directed at one band on last night's and that band is not from Denton/DFW.

First, I admit I had some concerns about the band booking this show from the start but did not listen to my instinct (bad me). I personally think its a bad idea to load a bill with so many band that there if a delay happens the whole show become 12 car pile up but hey that's just me and I'm a bit wacky. Also, its a good idea to let the bands know ALL the band on the bill and what order sometime before the show. Promotion for the show was significantly delayed since we couldn't get a response on 3 different emails sent about the lineup (thus my early concerns) and one band got no promotion because had no way of knowing there was a 5th band playing. While we were waiting for the band who planned everything to arrive it came to light that we were all pretty much in the dark (to varying degrees) about the evening. Once, the band arrived it got no better as they seemed to think everything would just magically fall into place and didn't feel the need to tell bands the set order or modified times (since things were running late) unless you tracked down the right person. We were told after the 1st band had started that bands would not have 30 min. sets as originally planned but 3 songs sets. Said person didn't feel the need to inform any other band of this since they didn't hunt him down. This includes the first band who were already playing while we were being enlightened. While we did ponder the idea of playing 2 songs and making them Slow Collision and Amethyste (our instrumental jams that can go from 5 - 20 min each) we realized this would only hurt the other bands who had done nothing wrong so we simply shortened the original set. Band number 2, who booked the show (and originally told us they wanted to headline), then went on to play a 6 song set! Not cool. Then they bailed out before the last band's set. I don't mean to come off as whining or complaining that is not my intention but the lack of togetherness was utterly shocking. Additionally, I felt a need to explain what happened to those who missed our set because they stepped outside for a smoke, some fresh air, etc. and when they stepped back in we were breaking down and thus utterly confused.

The 1st Church of Mad Scientology - Jan 30, 2007

On Tuesday January 30th, one of the Dallas/Ft. It is probably our song most likely to get stuck in your head. So, I guess that's our "radio friendly" tune if we have such a thing. It is also the only song on Geoparasitism that the lyrics were not written by Brannon. Brannon did however add the two line refrains that end the verses throughout the song as well as come up with the title. The rest however was written by Kim. While this may be as close as to radio friendly as we get there is one notable mutation. The choruses are instrumental only. But that is hardly the case for the last month and a half we have been in our secret secluded underground laboratory working on new sonic mutants and a whole array of new surprises waiting to be unleashed unsuspecting test subjects on Jan 30, 2007 when we return to the stage at J&Js in Denton. We promise a show like you've never seen from us and the opening of new dimension of weirdness even by our standards. We like to think of it as shock and gawk. After this week we will be emerging more often from the laboratory other than for cheap black elixirs to keep us going.

Meanwhile check out December's featured gem of a song on myspace (http://www.myspace.com/themadscientists), Amethyste.

Note: This had to be compressed way more than we would like to get it into myspace's size requirements, so this sound quality is not ideal.

Saturday's Show - Flashforwards and FlashBacks Were Induced!

Thanks to everyone who made it out to the show Saturday. It was great to see some of you we haven't seen in ages! Even though the rain poured down it didn't effect the enthusiasm of the crowd. We played an old school two piece show due to Christina being sick with an upper respiratory infection (she'll be back and ready for the heaviest set we've done in a while, next week at Dallas Scaregrounds). The set was abreviated and we did extended (and weirder than usual) versions of Amethyste and Slow Collision. intodown (www.intodown.com) was amazing as always. If you missed them this time don't worry we will be playing with them again in the near future. A special thanks goes to this incredible band for playing an impressive extended set. On a sad note this was probably our last Denton show for the year as we our going to be spending the next two months working on the next album. There will be two more chances to see us this year (Oct. 26th Dallas Scaregrounds and Oct. 31st Hangman's House of Horrors in Ft. Worth) before we descend down into the laboratory and re-emerge in January.

Why So Many Jazz Bars Close...

A "C", an "E-flat" and a "G" go into a bar. The bartender says,
"sorry, but we don't serve minors." So the E-flat leaves, and the C
and the G have an open fifth between them.

After a few drinks, the fifth is diminished and the G is out flat. An
F comes in and tries to augment the situation, but is not sharp
enough.

Then a D comes into the bar and heads straight for the bathroom,
saying, "excuse me, I will be a second."

An A comes into the bar, but the bartender is not convinced that this
relation of C is not a minor.

Then the bartender notices a B-flat hiding at the end of the bar and
exclaims, "get out now! You're the seventh minor I've found in this
bar tonight."

The E-flat, not easily deflated, comes back into the bar the next
night in a three piece suit with nicely polished shoes. The bartender
(who used to have a nice corporate job until his company downsized)
says, "You're looking sharp tonight, come on in! This could be a new
development."

This proves to be the case, as the E-flat takes off the suit, and
everything else, and stands there au natural. Eventually the C sobers
up, and realizes in horror that he's under a resolution.

C is brought to trial, and is found guilty of contributing to the
diminution of a minor, and sentenced to ten years of DS without Coda
at an upscale correctional facility.

On appeal, however, the C is found innocent of any wrongdoing, even
accidental, and the accusations to the contrary are bass-less.

The bartender, however, decides that since he's only had tenor so
patrons, the soprano in the bathroom, and everything has become alto
much treble and needs a rest, and closes down the bar.

October Featured Band: intodown

We have been trying to feature a different local band each month on
the website (on the right hand column). This month's featured band is intodown. Who, we just so happen to be playing with at Texas Jive this Saturday. intodown features Mike Clark on guitar working with hand picked top DFWmusicians. Mike spent his youth opening (in another band) for Rocky
Erickson and the 13th Floor Elevators and as you might expect the
music of intodown is very psychedelic. As he describes it on his
website, ( http://www.intodown.com) "deep, improvisational, psychedelic rock and rock". The music of intodown is more about art than commerce and is of the highest musicianship. On the band's myspace page ( http://www.myspace.com/intodown) influences include everyone from Pink Floyd, Cpt. Beefheart, and, Link Wray to Sonic Youth, Skinny Puppy, and Tiny Tim. While the mp3s are outstanding this is band that is all about the live show and is one of the best live performances I've seen this year. If you are unable to make it out to the show on Sat. at Texas jive in Denton be sure to check out the mp3s on the their website or myspace page.

Oct. Featured MySpace Song --- Slow Collision

Slow Collision is this month's featured song and it is fitting a song this Psychotic and scary would be available for the month of Halloween. Don't let the ballady melodic intro fool you this song song lures you in with its beauty and pulls you down into a musical meat grinder. If you attend our lives shows (thank you) this is what we typically close with and given the nature of the song it can vary widely from show to show. This is good example of what it can be when we nail it.

WARNING: In order to get this song to fit myspace size requirements its been compressed way more than we like.
Check it out all month on myspace and of course as always you can download (a higher quality but no perfect) at itunes

or get the whole album and hear it with no sonic compromises at cdbaby

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://themadscientistslablog.blogspot.com/2006/10/oct-featured-myspace-song-slow.html' title='Oct. It was a fun time and we appreciate it. Not our worst but not our best. Christina's bass drum pedal kept busting its nut and that's not the kind of thing you want to happen on stage. Plus, we were all exhausted from a very long and strange day in our personal lives. But we met a lot of cool people and preformed smoking versions of The Senders and Masquerade of the Macbre. The Test Subjects (email list members) got a free t-shirt for coming out as well as some of the new Test Subjects who signed up last night. You can sign up for the email list online at (www.themadscientists.biz/free.html) All things considered it was a good set and the sound system at Club Dada is fantastic. If you didn't make it out I highly recomend you check out Conastants (WWW.CONSTANTSOUND.COM) they put on an amazing show and are wonderful people. This epic psychedelic ballad that turns on a dime was the first song Kim & Brannon wrote together. On a fateful January night Kim took her Christmas money and purchased a fretless bass. Later that night Brannon and her began jamming and the majority of Key was written that night. A couple of months later Brannon was up studying for a biology test when the lyrics came to him and poured out onto the page in a matter of minutes. And volia, Key to the Universe was born. Key to the Universe also won Best Guitars in Experimental Rock for the week of Sept. 11, 2006 on GarageBand.com

Check it out all month on myspace and of course as always you can download at
itunes

Dodging Bullets

We got mentioned by the We Shot JR crew and we were pleasantly surprised to discover they don't think we suck! Much love to those who put some positive comments. If some people didn't hate us we would be doing something wrong.

The Mad Scientists are also playing and I think they'll be an appropriate match for Deep Snapper's debut. - www.weshotjr.com

August MySpace Song of the Month - Blue Jam Sammich

August featured song on myspace, is the shortest on Geoparasitism. Geoparasitism is available for $3 cheaper at CDBaby (http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/madscientists) during the month of August. So, if you've been thinking about ordering it now is the time. Do you enjoy music that challenges rather than insults your intelligence (musical and otherwise)? Do you prefer albums that provide a new sonic experience with each listen? Then Geoparasitism is the album for you. You’ll find genres change not from song to song; genre lines blur within songs. Songs spiral from experimental psychedelic jazz funk to prog metal with teleporting time changes and noise fests that would confuse Lou Reed. So go now to http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/madscientists and save $3.

"Your Like A Punk Rock Thelonious Monk"

While it may have been our shortest set ever (20 min.) it was also one of our finest. We rocked the house, made people dance, and got to meet some really cool new fans. Especially the jazz sax player who said, "Your like a punk rock Thelonious Monk". That made our night. All the bands, writers, solo artists, etc. that were involved came out in full force and had amazing sets. It was great fun to be part of such an exciting event. If you didn't make it out be sure to check out Cohesion's Second Saturdays at Texas Jive. They will be hosting shows featuring 3-4 local bands. It will be similar to the Birthday Bash only not 12 hours long. If this band's live shows don't get you moving you have no soul. jetscreamer (www.jetcreamertx.com) manages to capture the very best of a diverse range of musical genres often times in just one song. The first song off the album Starjob, Front Porch, starts off as a Texas blues rocker that would make SRV proud and then turns into a psychdelic guitar fest ala Syd Barrett era Pink Floyd. Songs like Black Hole combine a radio friendly feel while still retaining a true underground punk spirit by emphasizing chaotic noise based solos instead of melodic scale work. Any song that mentions Texas most notorious legends has to be doing something right. The band is a three piece (2 slide guitars and drums) which is difficult to believe considering the wall of sound they get in song like meow!!! and bliss. And if you enjoy epic noise fests in the vein of Sonic Youth you should also check out the Eliminator e.p., a fine example of what independent music can be.

If this Mad Robot is a Rockin'....

If you missed our show at the Darkside this Saturday. You missed one of our best performances. The sound guy Brian is a genius and really knows his stuff. Plus, he is very hospitable (as is all of the staff) and very funny. The Darkside is currently my favorite club is Dallas. When you do the kind of craziness we do you really know and appreciate the importance of someone of his caliber. We played a rockin' 45 minute set covered in a thick layer of slime and funk. Kim's wah wah pedal made its first on stage appearance ever, even though she has owned it for 7 years. A college roommate or a friend(s) of said roommate is suspected of breaking it. But thanks to a little bit of help the minor surgery was conducted earlier this week (6.6.6) and it has been reanimated. The crowd although small was very receptive to our experimentations. It turns out there were some very large shows that night in Dallas and we had a lot of competition. So, thanks to all of you showed up and decided that we were more important than reunion shows. If you missed the show you must check out Rubber Robot (www.myspace.com/rubberrobot). They are an excellent band out of Austin and they make a great companion with us on a bill. Heavy psychedelic/experimental rock with a theramin and the whole bands wears military type shirts and horse heads. Awwwwww yeah!
Headlining was SALVIA DIVINORUM (www.myspace.com/salviadivinorum. Also, from Austin they brought some old school heavy guitar based garage rock to the stage. I can promise not a single subject walked away disappointed after the unleashing of monstrosities on this night. (Sorry Sam for missing your bday party.) More live experimentations coming soon...

Mad Robots with Salvia explore the Darkside this Saturday 6.10.6

We will be playing this Saturday, June 10th, at the Darkside Lounge in Dallas. This WILL happen to your town if it hasn't already. This is the new trend. Since the economy has to keep growing more more places will be pilaged, raped, beaten, and left to die.

Being a Dentonite for 6 1/2 years I've heard people bemoan the death of this town since I got here. During this time I've watched a cool artsy town strongly based around a local economy become and more coporatized and gentrified into another Frisco/Plano/Lewisville surban hell. Are we there yet? No, but we are certainly on the fast track. When I first got here the only thing on the loop once you got away for I-35 was Mal-Wart and Lowes, then trees that reached to the sky. Now, its a bustling area that looks like it was surgically cut out of Plano and grafted onto the Denton landscape. Over the last few the City Council has been drooling like vampires in a blood bank over this new plan. They want more bourgois mcmansion owning types and less alternative lifestyle artsy types, all the while claiming Denton as an arts town. They've been chipping away at the soul of this town for a while but sent an A-bomb recently. Fry St. will exsist no more as we have come to know and love it. Kiss is goodbye. No more sitting on the roof of Cool Beans listening to a great band. No more drinking at TJs and finishing the night with some great wings, a good band, and pool. Forget rifling through for burried riches at Treasure Isles, singing Bohemian Rhapsody with strangers at the Tomato, or a romantic night of pasta, wine, and hookahs at Bagheri's. This is all ancient history. Or at least that's the way the city council would have it. A large Californian company has bought the property where all these establishments are located. They are planning on bulldozing it and putting up an 8 story apartment complex with businesses on the bottom that open up to the street. I'm sure the rent for these buisness will be out of the range of most local entrepeneurs. I have to wonder if anyone gives a flying fuck? I've heard some grumblings but not the outrage such a tragedy deserves. Have we really grown this complacent? When will you care? When the Kharma is bought out and bulldozed for a StarFucks? When Zebrahead is replaced? When they use eminant domain laws to take the Delta Lodge? Maybe when Voertman's becomes a Barnes & igNoble college book store and the Inferno becomes a Coyote Ugly? Or will you wait until they decide to change the laws the yard Nazis enforce, and that siding or wood on your home is no longer up to "community standards," and you have to get bricks or tear it down? Maybe when carports aren't good enough and are considered "trashy". Ironic, considering most stuff designed/created by Frank Loyd Wright is out of this world expensive but carports equal white trash. Maybe when there are no clubs left for your band to play at so you'll have to drive to Dallas or Ft. Worth but can't afford the gas so your bands dies from carbon monixide because you can't get out of your garage. It seems like the University might care, but it's sitting on its obsese ass dining off the corpses of the overworked students populus. When college towns lose what makes them unique people stop coming. Denton is on the verge of losing just that. IF UNT wants to change its image from a communiter school they better give students more of an inncentive to live here. That incentive doesn't come from huge corporations. Those are available where they live now. Why move to a place that's just like your hometown but your going to have to pay lodging? UNT, as an alumnus you disgust me. You are a sick bloated whore that needs to have your abssess drained. You do not listen to your student body only to your accountants. Students cry more parking and you give them more dorms. Housing is plentiful in this town. You do not need an eight story apartment complex. You're not that large of a school and never will be if you assist in sucking the individuality out of this town. Many people come here when looking at schools and like the fact its a smaller Austin. You can recognize most of the regulars in the area, but it is made up of a diverse range of backgrounds. Those people will leave when you take away (or at least cut it in half) a cultural haven like Fry St. Thus you will lose students who come here for that reason. The mayor and city council can kiss my ass in Hell. You claim you want an arts town; you want to build an arts walk, you care about the arts in this community. Then why don't you back your words with actions? What you define as art has no underlying substance but it matches that new couch and rug well. This town has more artists (painters, sculptors, writers, musicians, filmmakers) per capita than any town than I can think of. The only problem is they don't make "art" that is pretty and to your liking. Instead of helping bands you hurt them and the clubs (local businesses) by passing ordincences that make it more difficult for them to draw crowds. You don't want Art, you want arts & crafts. Just be honest about it and don't hide behind these facades.
Denton is dying and if you don't think so your either in denial, unobservant, or maybe you just enjoy the suburban nightmare. There is still time left to save her but it is running short. Are you going to strum your guitar while it burns or are you going to crank that amp to 10 and tell the fuckers whose town this really is?

West Memphis 3 -It could happen to me, it could happen to you. - Jello Biafra

If you visit our website (www.TheMadScientists.biz) regularly you know that each month we focus on a different relevant political/cultural issue to help raise awareness. When you look at our myspace page we have a small banner supporting the West Memphis Three. This month on the the website we are also turning our focus on these three young men. For those of you not familar with this case I'll post a brief synaposis from their website (www.wm3.org)

Shortly after three eight-year-old boys were found mutilated and murdered in West Memphis, Arkansas, local newspapers stated the killers had been caught. The police assured the public that the three teenagers in custody were definitely responsible for these horrible crimes. Evidence?
The same police officers coerced an error-filled confession from Jessie Misskelley Jr., who is mentally handicapped. They subjected him to 12 hours of questioning without counsel or parental consent, audio-taping only two fragments totaling 46 minutes. Jessie recanted it that evening, but it was too late Misskelley, Jason Baldwin and Damien Echols were all arrested on June 3, 1993, and convicted of murder in early 1994.
Although there was no physical evidence, murder weapon, motive, or connection to the victims, the prosecution pathetically resorted to presenting black hair and clothing, heavy metal t-shirts, and Stephen King novels as proof that the boys were sacrificed in a satanic cult ritual. Unfathomably, Echols was sentenced to death, Baldwin received life without parole, and Misskelley got life plus 40.
For over 12 years, The West Memphis Three have been imprisoned for crimes they didnt commit. Echols waits in solitary confinement for the lethal injection our tax dollars will pay for. They were all condemned by their poverty, incompetent defense, satanic panic and a rush to judgment.

Over the years many people have been drawn to this case for a variety of reason but two primairy reasons stick out. Anger over the justice systems and its failings as well as its biasises against those who are different and poor (I would liked to add disabled as well, the number of people in prisons who have experienced head trauma, have low IQs, etc. is staggering). Or sympathy from people who were Damien, Jason, and Jesse. "Weirdos" in small towns (and not so small towns) that dressed in black, and listened to "evil" music. T

There is currently a letter writing campaign to the governor of Arkansas going on that you can find out more details at here. Please get the letters in before May 26, 2006. Also, WM3 awareness day (June 3) is quickly approaching and in honor of these events. We are organizing a benefit show at J&Js in Denton on May 22. There will be information about what is currently going on, how you can help, and the current letter writing campaignWe are asking a $3 suggested donation all of the door will be going to help the West Memphis Three. This is in its early stages but all details should be known by the end of the week.

Tom Waits on the WM3:
"These boys didnt get a fair trial. They got picked for wearing black clothes and having long hair. I am fundamentally opposed to the death penalty, and as Lenny Bruce said, In the halls of justice, all the justice is in the halls. Perhaps, a jury is composed of twelve men and women of average ignorance. and a judge is a lawyer who once knew a politician. In our system of justice, the best client for a lawyer is a scared millionaire. The worst thing in our criminal justice system is to be broke or different."

Freak St. Fair: The Aftermath = 1 birth + 1 death

Well, maybe not a birth exactly but a birthday was celebrated. (Thanks for celebrating it with us Rissa). I'm a Sad Scientist since once again I failed at my ultimate experiment, to hit the brown note. One day it will happen! We are hoping to turn this into an annual event. Thanks to everyone who came out for the inaugural one. And a special thanks to gym mat nap, The Noise Revival, and the Violent Squids. Everyone put on a fabulous show. I would like to give an apology to gym mat nap and The Noise Revival for the sorry sound equipment. We had no idea that J&Js speakers had been stolen again and you did great with a crappy little amp. After the Noise Revival's set we found out The Squids had speakers that could be used for the rest of the evening. Thanks for saving the night guys. And to whoever stole the J&Js speakers. You are scum. This is a cool LOCAL DIY venue that is trying to keep a scene alive in a community that is narrowly escaping being swallowed by the suburban hell that is Lewisville. We need more places like J&Js and you are helping kill it when you pull shit like this. I'm sure you won't read this are even care but when the only place left to play in this town is Starfucks and rock bands have to drive to Dallas and Ft. Worth you'll be sitting around trying to figure out what happened. Just know you contributed to it that tragedy. Now go back to eating you corporate gentrified meal from some fast food corporate garbage place, sipping your "coffee" beverage from Starfucks, and listening to Clear Channel. FAIR: A NIGHT OF PSYCHEDELIC MAYHEM
April 5, 2006 (Denton, TX) -- -- Dentons Fry St. fair has long gathered attention for not only a full day of music but a day of bacchanalian decadence as well. The infamous fair has become a tradition in the North Texas area, a day for locals and former residents to party side by side and reminisce of old time and make new memories. But another lesser known tradition to mainstream Fair-goes also exists, anti-fairs and alternate fairs. On this weekend house parties with other great bands are only a drunken stumble away. And in this tradition is Freak St. Fair.

Freak St. Fair will be held J&Js in Denton on Friday April 21, 2006 (the night before Fry St. Fair). Organizers emphasize that in no way are they trying to compete with Fry St. Fair. Brannon Barr (organizer & guitarist/vocalist for The Mad Scientists) expounds, We are very much in the spirit of the Fry St. Fair. Our aim is to help people get in the mood and psyched up for the day to come. A lot of former residents return to Denton once a year for this event. They can meet up with friends and come out to Freak St. Fair eat great pizza, have a few beers, and hear eclectic music that is not typically featured elsewhere, and pay no cover. Freak St. Fair begins and ends early running from 8pm to Midnight.
The bands featured are a psychedelic lot that are more eclectic and bizarre than those typically featured at Fry St. Fair. The line up includes three Denton bands that have strong reputations for pushing boundaries and dont neatly fit into any one genre. The Violent Squid(Denton's ultimate noise band with a sense of humor), The Mad Scientists (the psychedelic mutants that escape from their lab leave observers enraptured, confused, or enraged), gymmatnap (one man creating multiple soundscapes). Also, coming in for one night only is Austins The Noise Revival(groove rock that makes the needle jump). Brannon states, We are fans of many of the bands playing at Fry St. Fair we just wanted an opportunity to expose the more chaotic and esoteric bands. It has been known to clear a room and fill it up (often in the same venue on the same night). We think of it as instrumental psychedelic noise eplorations into the the outer realms of beauty and maddness. But its best for us to just shut up and let you experience this song yourself at www.myspace.com/themadscientists (incense, candles, and any other mood setting accessories/accroutements are recommended). If you like this and the Burning Circus Tent you really should attend Freak St. Fair April 21, J&Js in Denton 8pm (stay tuned a new blog regarding this will be up tomorrow).
One more thing I would like to add. We had to compress the hell out of this to get the mp3 small enough to upload on myspace. So what you are hearing his has lost soooooo much. This is just to give you a little taste of this sonic concoction to experience it fully you must go to http://cdbaby.com/cd/madscientists
or better yet support Awesome local music stores:
Dallas:
Bill's Records & Tapes
Denton:
Cd Warehouse
Recycled Books
Houston:
Sound Exchange
Austin:
Waterloo

Geoparasitism (the album) Lyrics now Available

As you may have noticed we have a new addition to the site. For the month of March it is Key to the Univerese. Key to the Univese was the first song Kim & Brannon wrote together. The music was written the night she got her fretless bass and after listening to several Hendrix albums back to back. The lyrics came a few weeks later when Brannon was supposed to be pulling an all nighter for a test but inspriation doesn't necessarily strike at the most convient times. Ironically, it was one of the final songs Christina learned after becoming Mad. Check it out this month and provide feeback. We love feedback but if you've seen us live you've probably already figured that out.

Key to the Universe
Stars we see at night are light from eons past
matter changes constantly to energy
Will our structured minds ever grasp
the harmonic balance of enthropy?
Great marvels reside inside the human mind
but our knowledge of the universe is tattered.
We've learned so much yet we remian blind
our view is obscured by dark matter.
For every great mystery there lies an answer.
There are no true anomalies.
Bust as globalization spreads like a cancer
we know not who holds the key.

Metal spider probes are our window into space
They who know no god map His creations.
The atmosphere destroyed by the human race;
laid to waste as we construct space stations.
Interstellar travel still lies beyond our reach;
space itself we must learn how to bend
The world could be destroyed by laws of nature breached
Will the means be justified by The End?
The mysteries of life may lie beyond the stars
Dogmas for which mankind is not prepared.
Enlightenement is not won by way of fighting wars;
we can't progress until we learn to care.

3 Free Songs & Preview the Album Before You Buy

On our myspace site (www.myspace.com/themadscientists) we are making three songs (The Senders, The Burning Circus Tent, & Hideously Mutated Life) available free to download because we love you. We got to the venue only to find we weren't on any of the promotional materials and none that we sent were at the venue. There was a slight mix up but all was resolved and we rocked the place. The bill was on the punky side so we took a heavy route as opposed to a full fledge noise freak fest. It was all and all a good set. Brannon's amp is having a problem that is intermittent which makes it diffiuclt to track down the cause. We will try to get this cleared up when we return. The audience was receptive to the music especially considering how different we were from the other acts on the bill. I have some thoughts about the Austin vs. Denton that I will express in an upcoming blog. Today's plans include hitting Waterloo, Cheapo Records, Austin MoMA, and other adventures.

Fear & Loathing in Funland

Yesterday we began our long and ardous journey to Houston. We intended to leave before noon and made it out of Denton at about 1:00pm. We almost left Kim's bass head but narrowly escaped this tragic fate. We made it into Houston and entered the mysterious & magical world of Super Happy Funland. This is one of the best venues we have ever played. It was non-smoking and beautifully decorated with stylish artwork. Everyone there was exteremely cool and hospitable. We learned about an intriguing Texas legend that no one in the band (even with are vast knowledge of all things arcane and morbid) knew about. It seems there was a serial killer in the Heights (the neighborhood Super Happy Funland is located in) during the 70's known as the Candyman who lured 10-14 year old boys (some from the very street the venue is located on) to parties and then tortured and killed selected ones. The police told the parents of the missing boys that they had gone to California (with an aching in their hearts?) like all those other damn hippies. Then one of the young men the Candyman used to lure the boys killed the Candyman and told the cops where to find the bodis. We played an excellent set. We did one that was a little heavy on the craziness which was appropriate for an equally crazy venue. We also stopped at Sound Exchange and they agreed to carry Geoparasitism. This is a fantastic record store with a vary impressive collection of obscure and underappreciated music. Their vinyl selection was fabulous as well. Frank Zappa's Freak Out on vinyl, enough said. Drool... When we left this morning we got lost in Brenham (the ice cream haze of the city confused or hungry minds) and took the wrong highway. Once we realized our mistake we continued back but not after getting to see off the path road marks such as New Year's Creek, Christmas Road, and Gay Hill. Throughout our journey we saw many remarkable sights (ie. an enormous statue of Sam Houston and the abandoned Jezabel Saloon) that for various reasons we were unable to stop at but we did make time for one very special place, Pinata Palace (Yes, we took pictures. They'll be posted on here when we return.). This is the most increadible place a single wide trailer plus some build on shanty structures full of almost nothing but pinatas!!!!!! If you are ever on I-290 toward Austin you have to stop and check it out. We purchased a small piggy pinata for our Mad Scientists' barbecue this spring (details are in the making). Tomorrow we will ascend on Trophy's and show them Austin has nothing on Denton when it comes to weirdness. We are now in the lap of a luxurious 4 star hotel in Austin being treated in the manner we have become accostomed SOS if you get this please send more peanut butter we are running low...

Test Subjects Needed in Houston & Austin ASAP

We are packing up the lab and taking our sonic experimentations south to unveil our Frankensteinian monster of experimental dark psychedelic jazz metal and are seeking willing and not so willing subjects in Houston & Austin.
The first experiments will take plan in Houston at Super Happy Funland (2610 Ashland Street), December 28, 8:00 pm. Then the sonic slime will ooze northward on December 30, to Austin's Trophy's ( 2008 S. Congress) at 10:00 pm.
Audiences can expect a wide range of music of musical stylings from traditional slow blues to prog. metal with brain blistering time changes and loud experimental noise fests that release you from their grip only once you brain cells have been perfectly rearranged. While we make no promises on the results of the experiments former subjects have reported states of euphoria and synthesia. Subjects have also been observed to partake in strange gyrations that have been described as dancing. Side effects may include confusion, pupil dilation, and questioning of authority. Results may vary.

Continuing Mutations...

The website is continuing to mutate at rapid yet unpredicatable pace. The three newest became noticable last night but had been undergoing the strange changes for sometime. On the homepage you may notice random quotations appearing at the bottom of the page. Do not be alarmed these are naturally occuring mutations that are a result of more subjects becoming involved in our sonic experimentations. Next, on the mp3s page you may notice a field guide. This will assist you in selecting songs. Finally, on the press page you will find a new press release regarding the southbound spread of our sonic slime to Houston and Austin.

The End is Nigh!!!!!!

There is only one week left to vote on our MySpace poll.
